Ángel Martínez: a Servant of the Lord

Our first Artisan Story!

One of the biggest heartbeats of Genesis is to share the stories behind the handcrafted goods in our box. We desire to curate a global community of creatives and we believe a large part of this is done through the sharing of God’s testimony in His children’s lives. We had the privilege to interview our first artisan this past week, Ángel Martínez. We were left in awe of his resilient spirit which is reflected in much of Nicaragua’s culture.

We pray you are touched by Ángel’s heart after God as much as we are…

INTERVIEW:

What is your name?

My name is José Ángel Martínez.

How did you get involved in the journal-making business?

I got involved three years ago when I was fired from my job and Nathan, my friend and discipler, invited me to start a project with him. It consisted of making leather journals. I started by making two notebooks, which did not turn out well. Nathan went on teaching me and, little by little, I ended up doing a better job.

What is your favorite part about making journals?

My favorite part in creating the journals is the love dedicated to each person so they can have something created by my hands specially crafted for them. Above all, this art comes from God who gave me the ability to sculpt each journal.

When you aren’t making journals, how do you spend your time?

I am dedicated to my family in my home, especially to my spiritual family, which I serve in the Young Life ministry, and my church as a youth ministry leader, where I  lead young people to Christ. I love dedicating myself to the service that God chose for me to proclaim His name.

How did you come to know Jesus?

I met Jesus Christ thanks to the Young Life ministry in 2012 that held a soccer league in my neighborhood. They invited me to a camp and, since then, here I am - a servant of the Lord, proud of the love of Christ in my life.

You mentioned that you are involved in Young Life - that’s amazing!  What does your work with Young Life look like?

My work in Young Life is based on fostering the love of Jesus towards the youth at risk in our neighborhood of the Pantanal through weekly activities in which we have open meetings. We invite the boys of the neighborhood, we share dynamic games, and, above all, the most important thing is to proclaim the name of Jesus in a talk at the end of every meeting. We pray for them, and I love to do that because it's our goal to give encouragement to all young people and to share our hope in Jesus.

If you could share anything about Nicaragua with people from other countries, what would it be?

Nicaragua is an incredible, wonderful, and very beautiful country with small but lovely cities and, above all, has people who love to work for God and who want the best for our country. Despite all the difficulties we go through, there is always a smile on our face to show that love is stronger than everything else that wants to make us fall.

What dream (or dreams) would you like to share with those who will enjoy your journals?

The dream I would share is that everyone who has a journal in their hands knows they supported a young man who loves God, loves to serve Jesus and the other young people of Granada, and who wants to have his own home. This opportunity will enable me to do so.

How can we be praying for your country?

My prayer requests for Nicaragua are for the unemployed; COVID-19 patients; women and children; pastors, religious leaders, and missionaries; and the Nicaraguan government and economy.

How can we be praying for you?

I ask for prayer for my daughter, Linsey Kalany, to grow and develop healthily and for my wife Katherine’s health and service to the young people of Granada. I ask for prayer for unity and love between my other relatives - mother, aunts, uncles, grandmother, and brothers - that they may accept Christ in their hearts. I ask for prayer for the ability to buy a home for my wife and daughter, and that I can continue working for Jesus and the young people of my city and Nicaragua.
